Austrians first conquered Mount Cho-Oyu in 1954 followed by The Indian and German teams in 1958 and 1964 respectively. After them, many expedition teams have successfully reached on its summit. Tibet side route is most preferred for Mount Cho Oyu expedition due to the easy climbing technique route. Since 1998, our company Monterosa Treks and Expedition, located at Thamel, Kathmandu is also conducting the Mount Cho Oyu Expedition along with other peaks such as, Shishapangma, Lhakpa-Ri,Mt. Everest, etc.
Meeting and climbing information: Expedition to the sixth highest peak of the world, Mount Cho Oyu (8201m) begins after your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The staffs of Monterosa treks and expedition welcome our guests and transfer to hotel. The next day, we organize an introduction session with other climbing members & Expedition crews. Since then we process out for your Tibet visa and other necessary documents for the Cho Oyu Expedition.
After spending 3 days at Kathmandu, we drive you towards the Nepal-Tibet border up to the Friendship Bridge through Prithvi highway, Trisuli Highway, and finally Pashang Lamu highway. We will stay one night in Sybrubesi and 4 day drive to Rasuwa Gadhi, Kerung Bridge. The Chinese liaison officer and Chinese transportation will be waiting there for us. Loading our expedition gears on the truck and getting into the Land cruiser 4wd or in comfortable Minibus, we start traveling. Acclimatizing one night at Dzongkha (3000m) next day we drive to Tingri (4340m) for a further two nights acclimatizing. Then we drive along with the rough road jerking & bouncing through the grassy plain which leads up to the Chinese base camp.
Chinese Base Camp will be our 1st camp. Here, we stay two nights or more as per our own wish. Yak's schedule is also prepared by that time. Our Nepali cook will serve tasty food to our climbers at base camp. Then, we need to walk for 2 days to reach Advanced Base Camp (ABC) that is the main base camp where we plan to stay for a longer duration waiting for favorable situations for the Expedition.
Every climber is provided with their own tent as our service will be full board up to ABC and after that, the climbers should manage all services by themselves personally. From ABC, it is several hours of strenuous walk on a vague path over a moraine-covered glacier to the start of the mountaineering properly. Our actual mountaineering starts from Camp 1 (6400m). After that, the ridge is soft and easy enough for climbing. There are successive huge steps, several of which probably require fixing a rope up there for climbing. New rope needed to be fixed in co-operation with other expedition members on the mountain.
Camp 2 is on the edge of a large plateau at 7125m and you may attempt the summit from here if you think you are well prepared for this. Also, you may establish a light Camp 3 across the plateau and up on a minor ridge at 7550m. There are two rocky steps above Camp 3 where you should fix another set of ropes prior to our summit ascent.
Finally, you will begin your step towards the summit in next morning. The slopes are still steep above the rock bands and you may take a line to fix there, depending on conditions, however once on the crest of this ridge the terrain is straightforward along with a long haul to the kiss the summit plateau.
The panorama from the summit is breathtakingly beautiful. Silvery peaks such as Mount Everest 8848m,Mount Lhotse 8501m, Mount Nuptse 7855m, Mount Chamlang 7319m, Mount Ama Dablam 6856m and many other of the Everest region to the east and south smiles at us from around. In Tibetan language, ‘Chomo’ means ‘the goddess’and ‘Yu’ means ‘the turquoise’. Hence this peak is also called the "Turquoise Goddess" combining these Tibetan dialects.
